Are you an experienced data engineer looking to join a fast-growing team on a literal mission to save the world?

We’re looking for a senior data engineer to join a cross-functional team of software engineers, data scientists, machine-learning engineers, and data analysts, delivering data products for large utility clients as well as helping E Source grow its internal data practices.

E Source is a solutions-based consulting, research and advisory, and data science firm that’s been a change agent in the utility industry for over 30 years.

You’ll work with our engineering leadership to define what’s next for E Source data practices, contributing to our cloud-based, scalable data foundation. You’ll design and build automated pipelines to acquire, clean, and publish datasets using appropriate technologies depending on the volume, velocity, and variety of the data. You’ll be joining a team that values continuous improvement, focus, and flow and will relentlessly find improvements for optimization and automation of our daily work. Your mission on the team will be to lead the transformation of complex data sources into a meaningful output that helps to drive valuable energy decisions.

What you’ll do

  • Collaborate with product and engineering leadership on defining and executing data management strategy
  • Work on building the team’s hardest data pipelines, simplifying the ingestion and processing of large and disparate datasets through big data pipelines
  • Drive quality into our data practices by contributing to engineering standards and building automated data quality capabilities
  • Collaborate with internal and client stakeholders to translate business problems into technical solutions
  • Mentor junior data engineers, analysts, and data scientists on best practices for building sustainable and reusable datasets

What will make you a good fit

    • At least five years of relevant professional engineering and/or analytics experience
    • Expert-level skills in SQL, data structures, and databases
    • Experience building modern data pipelines using Python
    • Experience with pandas and big data technologies such as Spark
    • Strong data modeling skills and proficiency in schema design patterns
    • Experience connecting to and consuming data from SaaS application APIs
    • Mastery of modern continuous delivery concepts including git, CI/CD pipelines, pull requests, and unit and integration testing
    • Experience using an issue management software like JIRA
    • Hands-on experience building within a cloud-first environment such as AWS Glue, Lambda, and SageMaker
    • Ability to effectively communicate with technical teams and business stakeholders
    • A passion for energy and the environment

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience with Databricks, ideally with experience building to the medallion architecture
  • Experience with ETL optimization, designing, coding, and tuning big data processes
  • Sound knowledge of data lineage and data quality techniques
  • Previous experience in the energy or utility industry in an analytic role
  • BS or MS in management information systems, computer programming, software engineering, data science, or an equivalent STEM field

A little about E Source

Since 1986, E Source has focused on partnering with utilities to help their customers save electricity. That novel approach defined the art of electric end-use efficiency—better known as energy efficiency. We’ve expanded that concept to include a broader perspective of sustainability for utilities that deliver electricity, natural gas, and water.

We work to enhance relationships with the people utilities serve, achieve the next generation of savings, and lead the carbon-reduction effort. We help utilities think differently, make data useful, and learn from the best strategies across the industry. Our people, our insights, and our network help our clients and give them the assurance that the programs they implement are the most effective.

  • We provide a 401(k) plan with a 3% employer match.

The budgeted salary for this position is $110,000 to $130,000 + annual bonus. Actual pay will be adjusted based on experience.
