SomaDetect is a high-growth technology startup in the dairy industry that is looking to expand its development team. We have a diverse team that strives to develop fiercely innovative solutions, with a focus on quality to create products that put farmers first. The company is rapidly trying to scale different MVP products in multiple locations. Improving the efficiency of repeatability and improving the MVP model baselines will be the key focus in the upcoming year. SomaDetect is now a fully remote company, with team clusters in Buffalo, NY, and across Canada (southern Ontario, Ottawa, Fredericton, and Halifax). This is a remote position.

We are looking for a talented and innovation-driven technical data science manager who is passionate about leading a team of world class scientists to solve difficult customer problems in the dairy industry using the latest scientific advances. You will be directly responsible for leading a team of scientists through the ideation, design, prototyping, development, and launch of innovative scientific solutions. You will closely partner with project managers, sensor development team, cloud team, UI designers, engineers etc. to pioneer state-of-the-art solutions to extremely challenging problems in machine learning and computer vision. You will help hire, mentor, and develop the best and brightest ML and data science talents while our organization rapidly continues to expand. This role requires someone well versed in the fundamentals of data science, computer vision and machine learning. The ideal candidate must also have the experience and problem-solving abilities necessary to extract insights and discover patterns within messy, real-world data sets.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Leading a team of data scientists, software developers and engineers to integrate algorithms into a complete product
  • Ability to grow the team by hiring and promoting a team of world class scientists and engineers.
  • Ability to always understand the big picture of product development and the KPIs of the product as laid out by the business and the operations team
  • Ability to identify the technical risks and challenges for each product portfolio of the company
  • Ability to conceptualize machine learning solutions for real-world problems (a product oriented approach)
  • Ability to integrate data from different sources/sensors to be able to find the most customer friendly, generalized and scalable solution for the farmers in the dairy industry
  • Ability to have a constant eye on how innovations in the field of deep learning, computer vision, time series predictive modeling can be applied to SomaDetect problems
  • Thoroughly review codes and tests and objectively evaluate the scope of validity of any R&D deliverables
  • Responsible for understanding and assisting the planning of the data collection procedures collaboratively with other operational teams for building the relevant predictive models.
  • Ability to understand an end-to-end product development/deployment lifecycle.
  • Ability to achieve stretch goals in a highly innovative and startup-like environment.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Data Science, or related technical fields.
  • 5+ years of post-Masters (or 2+ years of post-PhD) professional experience in Machine Learning, Computer Vision, and/or Artificial Intelligence
  • Proven track record of successfully deploying state-of-the-art machine learning solutions to solve difficult customer problems.
  • Strong programming skills in Python (must have) and/or R(a plus)
  • Experience with data analysis, computer vision and visualizations (numpy, pandas, opencv, scikit-image, matplotlib etc.)
  • Strong fundamental grasp of machine learning and deep learning concepts (Random Forests, SVMs, CNNs, LSTMs etc.)
  • Knowledge of deep learning frameworks: TensorFlow, Keras
  • Experience working in Linux environment
  • Knowledge and experience in statistical and data mining techniques using time series datasets, Bayesian Probability, Markov Models (HMM)
  • Experience in using AWS (S3, Sage Maker)
  • Excellent oral and written communication
  • Works effectively in small as well as large teams
  • Experience in working in an agile environment, using project management and reporting tools (e.g., Confluence, Jira etc)
